Attendee Certificates
In this article
Overview
Attendee certificates let your attendees download a personalised PDF certificate, such as a certificate of attendance or a CPD certificate, from your event website.
You decide which tickets qualify, when the certificate is available and what it looks like. Evessio works out the recipients for you from their tickets and check-ins, and you can add or block individual people.
Note 🗒️
Certificates can only be applied to attendance tickets, so set your tickets up first. To require check-in, attendees must be checked in with the Evessio check-in app.
Create a certificate
Navigate to Attendance > Certificates and click Add certificate.

The list shows each certificate with its template, status, availability window, number of recipients and number of downloads.
Certificate details
- Name: shown to attendees on their certificate card and used as the PDF file name.
- Template: choose System default or one of your own templates (see Design the certificate template). Once saved, click Preview to see a sample PDF.
- Available from / Available to: the window in which attendees can download the certificate, in the event's time zone. Leave Available to empty to keep it open-ended.
Fill in the Template variables to personalise the wording on the certificate:
- CPD hours: for example 12 or 6.5.
- Display date: free text such as June 2026. If left empty, the month and year of download are used.
- Signatory name and Signatory title: the person signing the certificate.

Recipients and status
- Ticket types (required): the tickets that qualify for the certificate.
- Ticket status: for example Approved. If left empty, tickets of any status qualify, including Pending and Cancelled. We recommend selecting Approved.
- Attendee check-in: tick this to include only attendees who have checked in at least once.

Click Save. New certificates start as Draft. When you are ready, open the certificate again and change its Certificate status:
| Draft | Hidden from attendees. You can still preview it, check recipients and import. |
| Active | Recipients can download it from the event website during the availability window. |
| Disabled | Hidden from attendees and no longer downloadable. Use this to retire a certificate that has already been downloaded. |
Design the certificate template
The System default template is a ready-made A4 certificate of attendance. To use your own logo, signature or wording, create your own template.
On the certificates list, click Edit certificate templates. This takes you to Email Templates > Attachments. Click + to add a new template, or copy an existing one, and edit it in the visual or source editor.
Click [VARIABLES] to insert attendee and certificate details. Each variable is replaced with the real value when an attendee downloads their certificate.

Note 🗒️
Use full https:// image links for logos and signatures so they appear in the PDF. Template changes apply to every download from then on.
Here is an example certificate produced from a template:

Check who receives it
Open the Recipients tab and select a certificate, or click the recipient count on the certificates list.

Recipients are worked out live, so new tickets, ticket changes and check-ins show up straight away.
- Check-in: Absent, or In/Out with the number of check-ins.
- Downloads: how many times the attendee has downloaded the certificate.
- Override Status: Issued means the certificate was given to someone without a qualifying ticket. Denied means it was blocked for someone who would otherwise qualify.
- Click the ✖ next to a certificate name to deny it for that person. Click the undo icon to reverse it.
- Click the PDF icon to download a person's certificate yourself, for example to email it to them. Your own downloads are not counted.
- A * before a name means the name entered on the registration form differs from the account name. The certificate uses the registration form name.
- Click the blue Recipients button to export the list to Excel.
Issue or deny certificates in bulk
To give the certificate to people without a qualifying ticket, or to block several people at once, click Import on the Recipients tab.

- Click Download template and fill in one row per person: their Email and an Action of Issue, Deny or Skip. A blank action is treated as Issue.
- Click Upload spreadsheet and select your .xlsx file.
- Check the preview. It shows which rows match an attendee account, and you can change the action for any row.
- Click Apply import. Nothing changes until you do.
Note 🗒️
Emails are only matched to existing attendee accounts for this event. No new accounts are created. Imports are available for Draft and Active certificates, up to 5,000 rows.
To remove all imported and denied overrides, click Clear overrides. Recipients who have already downloaded the certificate keep it.
How attendees download their certificate
Attendees sign in to your event website and open My Certificates, either from the event menu or from Event > My Certificates in their account area. Each certificate they qualify for is shown as a card. Clicking Download opens the PDF.

- The menu link appears once the event has at least one Active certificate. You can rename the page in your website content.
- Outside the availability window, or when a certificate is Draft or Disabled, it is not shown.
- No email is sent automatically. To let attendees know, send a mailshot that includes the Member certificates page URL variable.
Tips and FAQs
An attendee can't see their certificate. What should I check?
- The certificate is Active and today is within its availability window.
- They hold one of the certificate's ticket types, with a matching ticket status.
- They have checked in, if check-in is required.
- They are not Denied on the Recipients tab.
- They are signed in with the same account that holds the ticket.
Can I delete a certificate?
Only if nobody has downloaded it yet. Otherwise, set its status to Disabled.
Will changing the ticket types affect people who already have it?
Yes. Eligibility is checked on every download, so removing a ticket type also removes access for those attendees. Use Import to issue it to them individually if needed.
Which name appears on the certificate?
The name entered on the ticket registration form, or the account name if none was entered.
