Volume Discounts

Volume Discounts, and subsequently Cumulative discount, rules allow you to apply automatic pricing reductions based on the quantity of items selected, and how discounts are combined.

You can define discount tiers to reward higher-volume purchases, as well as control whether discounts apply across all items, within specific bands, or stack together for a single transaction.

Applying a volume discount to an individual product

You can assign volume discount rules directly to a product. This allows you to control pricing based on quantity for that specific item only.

This is useful when:

  • A product has unique pricing rules
  • Discounts should not apply to other products.

To apply a volume discount to a single product, go to Revenue > Products, click on the product type, and then finally, the specific product you wish to apply the discount to.

Scroll to the end of the product configuration page until you find the section called Volume Discounts.

Then, configure your volume discount rules.

Note πŸ—’οΈ

Volume discounts can only be applied to individual products if you are not using a price template.

Applying a volume discount to a price template

Volume discount rules can also be applied to a price template, allowing the same discount structure to be reused across multiple products.

This is useful when you want to manage discounts by groups of items rather than per product, and ensure discounts are applied when products sharing the same price, e.g. your third entry to any awards category free, or applying a 10% discount on all individual tickets once you buy 5 or more.

To apply a volume discount to a price template, go to Revenue > Products and click on the product type. Then, open your price template by clicking on the template name in the Price column.

Alternatively, navigate to price templates, and click on the blue pencil icon✏️ to edit the specific template you wish to apply the discount to.

Then, configure your volume discount rules.

Configuring your Volume Discounts

Once you have determined if you are applying a volume discount to an individual product or to a pricing template, you can begin to configure its rules.

To get started, first determine the discount type.

You can choose to discount by a percentage value (1-100%), or currency, which will discount by your chosen monetary value.

Then, click Add Rule.

Volume discounts are set up using bands, where each band defines:

  1. The number of items required
  2. The discount applied (based on the discount type determined)

Use the Apply to section to choose how the discount is applied:

  • All items β†’ the same discount applies to every item once a tier is reached
  • Only items in band β†’ different discounts apply depending on the quantity range

Example: If you set a 50% discount for items 2–2:

  • Only items in band β†’ item 1 is full price, item 2 gets 50% off
  • All items β†’ both item 1 and item 2 get 50% off

When you are happy with the rules applied in the band, click the green check mark βœ… to accept your rule.

You can add as many rules as you wish.

Then, choose if you will make the discount cumulative.

Cumulative Discounts

If you like, you can check the option Make discount cumulative.

Cumulative discounts allow you to apply volume-based pricing across multiple transactions, rather than during a single purchase.

This means the system keeps a running total of how many eligible items a customer has bought over time. As they buy more, they may move into a higher discount tier.

Warning ⚠

Cumulative discounts are only calculated when previous transactions have been Paid or Completed. Invoiced transactions will not be considered.

How the discount is applied

The way the discount is calculated depends on the Apply to setting, determined when configuring your volume discounts.

Only items in band

The discount is applied only to the items that fall within each pricing band.

As customers make additional purchases, their total item count increases and spans multiple bands. Each band is priced separately.

For example, a customer's first purchase is submitted and paid for without any discount.

Then, they return at a later date and purchase the same item (or another item linked to the same volume discount). The system recognises this as their second eligible item and applies the 50% discount to that transaction.

All items

The discount is applied to all items purchased so far, including previous transactions that have already been paid for.

When a customer reaches a new discount tier, the system:

  • Recalculates what they should have paid for all previous items
  • Applies the difference as a discount in the current transaction

This means earlier purchases may effectively receive a discount later, once a higher tier is reached.

For example, consider the band configured is:

  • Items 3–10 β†’ 15% (Apply to All items)

Customer purchases across multiple transactions:

  • Transaction 1 (buys 2 items @ Β£100 each β†’ total = 2)

    β†’ Pays Β£200 (no discount)

  • Transaction 2 (buys 1 item @ Β£100 β†’ total = 3)

β†’ Now qualifies for 15% discount on all items

β†’ Each item should be Β£85 (total Β£255)

β†’ Customer has already paid Β£200

β†’ This transaction charges the difference β†’ Β£55 to pay

Key point

Once the customer reaches the minimum quantity (3 items), the discount is applied to all items, and any adjustment for earlier purchases is included in the current transaction.

Using Cumulative Discounts with vouchers

If both cumulative discounts and voucher discounts apply:

  1. The cumulative discount is calculated first
  2. The voucher discount is applied afterwards
